Formal Hall

Dining at Formal Hall is a traditional and very popular part of College life.

Formal Hall is a three course dinner served by College staff by candlelight in our beautiful dining hall.

There's a dress code: suit and tie or cocktail dress, and students and Fellows wear their academic gowns. It's part of the classic Cambridge experience and always a memorable occasion.

At Jesus we have a Formal Hall five times a week at 7.30pm: Tuesday to Friday and on Sundays. Postgraduates dine separately on Wednesday nights in Upper Hall.

You can bring up to three guests, so it’s a great way to celebrate a special occasion with family or friends. Guests must also follow the dress code and the  for Formal Hall.

Formal Hall tickets

Our Formal Halls are very popular, and it's a good idea to book your tickets up to seven days ahead to avoid disappointment, especially on Sundays or if there is a themed dinner.

You can book your ticket and let us know about any dietary requirements you or your guests might have up until 3pm the day before the Formal Hall or by 3pm on the Friday before if you are going to Hall on a Sunday night.

  • Tickets cost £7.10 for Jesus undergraduates and £9.40 for each guest and for postgraduates.
  • Tickets for Postgraduate Halls on Wednesdays are £10.40 for College members and £14.35 for guests, and the ticket price includes port and cheese after the meal.

You can buy your tickets on the , the College intranet. If you haven't paid the kitchen fixed charge then your ticket price will be the same as for guests. Unfortunately we can't transfer tickets or give refunds.

We provide iced water but you will need to bring other drinks in yourself. You're allowed to bring soft drinks and up to a 750ml bottle of wine per person. The College bar sells a good range of reasonably priced wine.

When to arrive

On the night we recommend getting to the hall before 7.15pm because there's often a queue. Everyone must be seated by 7.30pm, when the Master says grace.

Menus and special diets

We publish the menu for each Formal Hall at least a week in advance, you can find them posted outside the Hall or , the College intranet.

We can accommodate most dietary needs but there might be a small supplementary charge for special requirements. If you have any questions about allergies, or any other aspect of your booking, please contact the Manciple’s office by calling +44 (0)1223 339485 or emailing manciple@jesus.cam.ac.uk.

Group bookings

Group bookings are only permitted on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings for a maximum of 30 people. You'll need written permission from the Dean for group bookings of five or more guests.

Before contacting the Dean, please email the Manciple’s office on manciple@jesus.cam.ac.uk to check availability on the date you want to invite your group. Then you can apply for , the College intranet.

Please allow at least two weeks for your request to be approved. We have to restrict the number of group bookings during Easter term, if possible please book for another term.

What first attracted me to ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±ºÅÂë was its reputation and history, central location without being touristy, and the postgraduate housing options. When I arrived at Jesus I was so pleased to find the partner accommodation was spacious, affordable, and situated very close to the college, allowing us to really take advantage of the facilities. We especially enjoyed The Roost, the nicest of all the college bars, doubling as a café during the day - ideal for studying or meeting up with groups - and a lively pub in the...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...

I chose ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±ºÅÂë because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±ºÅÂë has been at the heart of my Cambridge experience. I chose the College because I was impressed by its distinctive blend of academic rigour and extracurricular achievement. A College for all-rounders, Jesus is a lively and rewarding place to study. I couldn’t be happier here! Friendly and engaged, the Jesus postgraduate community never ceases to impress me. At ease with themselves and forever curious, my peers go out of their way to cultivate a sense of camaraderie. After a day of leafing through old manuscripts at the National...

ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±ºÅÂë has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...
